Deciphering Exchange 2007 and Outlook 2007 Licensing

|

There are a few major changes regarding Exchange 2007 licensing that create differences from previous releases of Exchange. According to our read of the latest information on Microsoft's sites, this is a summary of the changes as we interpret them. For definitive information, contact Microsoft or read the articles linked to in the "Sources" section below.

  1. Outlook 2007 is no longer included as part of the Exchange Standard CAL ($67). Outlook 2007 must be purchased separately ($109.95) or as part of Office 2007. Customers who bought Software assurance on Exchange 2003 before November 30, 2006 receive a free upgrade to Outlook 2007.
  2. Customers who have previously purchased Software Assurance for Exchange 2003 receive rights to the Exchange Standard CAL in Exchange 2007. Customers must purchase the Exchange Enterprise CAL to gain additional functionality, including SPAM/virus filtering.
  3. Exchange Enterprise CALs can be purchased for a subset of the users in an organization rather than the entire organization.
  4. The Exchange Enterprise CAL with Software Assurance ($36) adds support for Unified Messaging, Journaling, Compliance, and premium antispam/antivirus support – either hosted (Frontbridge) and/or deployed onsite (Sybari).
  5. The Exchange Enterprise CAL without Software Assurance ($34) only adds support for Unified Messaging, Journaling, Compliance. Antivirus/Antispam support is not included without Software Assurance.
